It unfolds the scenic beauty of Khumbu and makes them visit many picturesque sites and hidden places. In addition, the hike provides trekkers an impressive view of lush meadows, steep valleys, pristine mountain lakes, and alluring villages.

Everest Base Camp is almost 144km far from Kathmandu in north-eastern Nepal. It’s just beneath the Khumbu Glacier at 17,598 ft, between towering mountains, steep rocks, and icefalls.

The trek kicks off with an uphill walk to Phakding after flying to the beautiful town of Lukla. It then makes its way from Dudh Koshi River Valley below and ascends a steep trail heading to Namche. Trekkers walk through pine and rhododendron forest before entering the Sagarmatha National Park and crossing suspension bridges.

It passes several remote villages like Dingboche and Lobuche to reach the Everest Base Camp. Up to this point, the trail is rugged but not as hard as the one leading to base camp. Trekkers will have to climb steep hills and walk from the edge of the valley to arrive at the small settlement.

The trail running from Gorakshep to Everest Base Camp is composed of dirt and loose rocks with a few steep sections. This may cause hikers to feel little discomfort and use more energy than the lower level. But, once they reach the campsite, trekkers will get to watch the magnificent view of Khumbu Icefall, glacial moraine, and

After exploring the base camp, the trail returns to Lukla, passing through Pangboche and Namche Bazaar. It takes around three days to descend the trail and fly to Kathmandu, which comes with a fantastic view of glistening snow peaks, alluring villages, and hilltops.

When is the Best Time?

Since Everest Base Camp is fantastic any time of the year, hikers can travel it whenever they want. However, most of them still prefer to visit the camp in spring and autumn when the weather is warm and bright.

Mid-October and April is the best time to walk the main EBC trail as they put a breathtaking view of stunning snow-capped mountains, rolling green hills, and vibrant valleys. The weather is mild around these months, making it easy for trekkers to walk the trail.

The month between June and September is considered an off-season for trekking as there is continuous downpour around this time. Nothing seems great about the weather, especially the dark clouds looming in the sky.

Spring Season

Everest Base Camp draws thousands of trekkers each year in spring for an incredible atmosphere and great views. The season offers a great walk to the visitors with overwhelming surroundings, warm sunshine, and pleasant weather conditions.

The temperature is slightly chillier at the beginning of March. But, with passing time, the weather gets more comfortable and better. The climate can be a little cold at a higher altitude, but down in the valley, it’s temperate with beautiful sunny days.

Walking along the path, trekkers can witness the spectacular scenery of the hilly countryside, verdant hills, and steep-sided valleys. Everything comes to life in spring, whether it’s the blooming flowers or wildlife waking up from hibernation.

The average temperature of the Everest Base Camp is 10 Degree Celsius between April and May. But after the end of the season, the temperature rises gradually, reaching up to 14 Degree Celsius. The days start to get a lot hotter from June, following which trekkers prefer walking into the forest or under the canopy, which provides shade.

Autumn Season

Autumn is another beautiful time of the year to trek Everest Base Camp. Hikers can expect mellowy and warm weather conditions in the season. Autumn offers mild climate with high humidity and precipitation, which makes the trekking more convenient.

The air is crisp and often clear from mid-September to November. In the presence of colorful fall foliage, chilly air, and crowded trails, trekkers get a strong vibe of autumn during October.

Autumn brings a different festival to the valley and ensures to introduce it to the trekkers. Celebrations are happening in the villages, and even visitors are allowed to participate in them. They can perform songs and other traditional rituals followed by the locals.

November marks the end of the autumn season, following which the weather gets cold and a bit harsh. From the end of the month, days get shorter and darker, so trekkers will have to keep track of time. They’ll have to make it quick on the trail, or it’ll be impossible for them to reach the destination.

Off-Season

If you intend to go solo on the trail without any crowd, winter and monsoon can be the season for hikers. The weather is a bit harsh during the season, and extra precaution has to be taken. In monsoon, trekkers will have to deal with continuous showers, which makes the trail filthy.

As they become slippery, it gets tough to walk the murky trail. Trekkers can expect rainfall every day for three months, starting from mid-June to the end of September. Monsoon also witnesses some of the hottest days of the year, with temperatures rising up to 22 Degree Celsius in the daytime.

But, once the rain has stopped, trekkers will get a crystal clear view of soaring snow peaks, vivid valleys. As the rain washes the dirt, trekkers will get a fresh breath of air.

Far off, the weather is quietly cold in winter with light snowfall and high winds. Temperatures are generally below Degree Celsius in the month, causing trekkers to shiver. The freezing weather and cold make the trek to Base Camp much more challenging than it actually is.

The trail at higher elevations is often layered in snow so, walking the path doesn’t get any easier in winter. Trekkers may even have to use spikes and hiking poles on the snowy trail for better traction. With it, they can easily scale the ice-covered rocks and snowfield without suffering from frostbite.

Wearing gaiters also helps a lot to stay warm and avoid injuries while traveling the icefields and snow slopes. The views in winter are nothing less than a fairy tale with a dust of snow coats over houses and trees. Frozen lakes, snow-covered valleys, and mountains look magical in winter.

Itinerary

Upon your arrival, our officials will meet you at the Tribhuvan International Airport. After a warm welcome, they’ll transfer you to the hotel where you can freshen up. Get some rest, and we’ll meet you in the afternoon for last-minute preparation. In the meeting, we’ll briefly discuss the trek and introduce the trekkers with the crew members. If there is any trekking equipment you need to grab, get it right now. Overnight stay in a hotel.
Phakding Altitude: 2,610 meters Walking Hours: 2-3 hrs We’ll fly to Lukla early in the morning to avoid traffic and heat. The direct flight from Tribhuvan Airport will last half an hour before we land at the beautiful Sherpa town. Throughout the whole journey, we’ll get stunning glimpses of Himalayan ranges, sweeping hills, lush meadows, and waterfalls. After arriving at the town of Lukla, we’ll take some time to have breakfast. Shortly afterward, we’ll leave for the trek to Phakding, which typically requires almost 3 hours. It starts with an uphill walk from the left bank of Dudh Koshi River and then a short descent through the pine forest. From there, we navigate mixed terrains with several highs and lows to arrive at the village of Phakding. It is located in the Dudh Koshi River Valley, just south of Monjo at 2,610 meters. Overnight stay in a lodge.
Namche Bazaar Altitude: 3,440 meters Walking Hours: 5-6 hrs The journey from Phakding to Namche starts easy, following the Dudh Koshi River Valley and steep stone stairs through the rhododendron forest. Passing several small villages, we arrive at the Sagarmatha National Park, where the entry fee is collected. We’ll cross the Dudh Koshi River several times using a suspension bridge and ascend the rugged hill. Navigating the winding trails, we appear at the top of a ridge, which provides a magnificent view of Lhotse. The last few hours of the trek are quite stressful as it continuously gains elevation. There’s no downward or plain walk, making the trek more strenuous and challenging. After walking the course for nearly 6 hours, we’ll arrive at the Namche Bazaar. Tonight we’ll stay in a lodge at Namche.
The trail out of Namche is incredibly steep and uphill, increasing the risk of altitude sickness. So, instead of forging ahead, we’ll stop at Namche and take proper rest. We’ll spend the morning walking a rough trail to Syangboche at 12,400 ft high. It takes 2-3 hours to reach the Hotel Everest View and enjoy mesmerizing views of diverse landscapes, towering hills, and vivid valleys. We’ll also get a close snap of Mt. Everest and its surrounding snow peaks, including Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Lhotse. After the sightseeing is over, we’ll have a warm breakfast at the hotel.
Deboche Altitude: 3,820 meters Walking hours: 5-6 hrs After a day off at Namche, it’s time for us to get back to the trail and make our way to Deboche. We’ll walk from the edge of the hill out of the village before descending to the river at Phungi Thenga. After stopping at the village for lunch, we continue the trek uphill from the valley’s edge. The trek gets easier after coming off the level ground as we can see the pace increasing. Following one or two hours of walk, the trail descends to the river and crosses the wooden bridge. After arriving at Tengboche, we’ll visit the famous Tibetan monastery and offer our prayers. We’ll climb down the hill and make our way through the rhododendron forest upon exploring the pilgrimage. Along the path, we can witness an old memorial made in honor of the lost lives in the mountain. From here, we’ll trek a few more miles to get to Deboche, a small Sherpa village in Khumbu. There are ample tea houses and lodges here to spend the night for trekkers.
Dingboche Altitude: 4,360 meters Walking Hours: 4-5 hrs After breakfast, we’ll gently descend the trail through the lush forest, full of juniper, pine, and birch. Crossing the pontoon bridge over Imja Khola, we ascend the trail to the village of Pangboche. As we reach there, the impressive view of Ama Dablam starts to show up, making the trek even more exciting. The rising altitude makes the trek a little strenuous and causes trekkers to suffer from altitude sickness. The trail leading to Dingboche has a series of large old chortens, prayer walls, and painted rock faces. Walking through the forest, we’ll encounter many wild animals, including Himalayan Tahr, brown mountain goats, and giant bearded vultures. Before reaching the lower Pangboche, we’ll move through a stunning archway that stretches the opening in the rocks. Traveling the rugged trail from below, we end up at the Upper Pangboche. Another 30 minutes walk from Phortse and we reach Shomare, a common stop for trekkers to have lunch. After enjoying the scenic view and some delicious lunch, we continue hiking the mountainous terrains and lush meadows where you can see herds of yak grazing. Crossing the Lobuche river, we make another half an hour climb up the steep hills to get to Dingboche.
Following the demanding and challenging route trip to Dingboche, a day off for trekkers seems fair enough. So, instead of preceding the trail, we’ll stop at this Sherpa village and take a side trek. Early in the morning, we’ll hike up to Nakartsang Gompa, which takes around two hours. Its trails are steep and continuously upwards, which hikers may find upsetting. But, once they reach the monastery, they’ll be delighted by the unreal charm of dramatic hills, mountainous terrains, rocky cliffs, and glaciers. We’ll get an incredible view of picturesque snow peaks, including Ama Dablam, Pumori, Mt. Everest, Nuptse, and Island Peak from the hilltop. Shortly after visiting the monastery and enjoying the magnificent view, we’ll climb down the trail back to the village. If there’s any spare time left, we’ll visit Chhukung to have a close shot of Imja Valley and Imja Tse. We can also witness Imja Glacier and beautiful rhododendron forests from the valley. Overnight stay in a lodge.
Lobuche Altitude: 4,930 meters Dongla Altitude: 4,620 meters Walking Hours: 6 hrs After the day off at Dingboche, we’ll once again get back to the trail, which kicks off with a steep climb from the edge of the hill. The path here provides a lovely view of Chukhung Valley and Island Peak at a far distance. Walking over the rocky paths, we arrive at Dugla, a small settlement at 4,595 meters. The trail slowly heads towards the river fed by Khumbu Glacier, which we cross using a wooden bridge. We’ll briefly stop at Dugla to have lunch and then start climbing uphill for almost an hour. En route, the trail offers us an impressive view of Ama Dablam, Mt. Pumori, and Everest. We keep following the rugged trail until it arrives at Lobuche. Nestled in Khumbu at 4,940 meters, Dingboche village is a common stop for trekkers to spend the night. It's the last overnight stop for lodging on the trail to the Everest Base Camp.
Gorakshep Altitude: 5,180 meters Everest Base Camp Altitude: 5,34meters Walking Hours: 6-7 hrs Gorakshep has one of the most challenging trails on the entire trek. So, we’ll start the hike earlier and take roughly 3-4 hours to cover the distance of 5 hours. Though the trail doesn’t seem much, it still is difficult to walk, following huge rocks and boulders. We’ll spend the first few hours ascending steep hills to the top of a mountain pass. From there, the trail follows a rocky moraine beside the ice slopes and glacial lakes. After passing the last rocky moraine dunes, the course takes us to the small settlement of Gorakshep. The village is perched on the side of the frozen lakebed, right at the foot of Kala Patthar. After making a final stop at the hamlet for lunch, we’ll continue hiking to the base camp from the south. The trek takes 2-3 hours, depending on the pace and effects of altitude on hikers. The trail takes over the Khumbu Glacier and finally ends at the base of Khumbu Icefall, providing a lovely view of the snow-capped mountains. While at the base camp, we’ll do some exploration and watch the surrounding mountains, including Mt. Everest and Nuptse. As soon as the sightseeing is over, we’ll retrace the steps back to Gorakshep, which is a dry flat field. We’ll stay the night in the village and continue with the rest of the trek on the following day.
Kala Patthar Altitude: 5,644 meters Walking Hours: 8-9 hrs To watch the sunrise view from Kalapathar, we’ll trek the mountain early in the morning. We’ll start ascending the rocky trail from ground level at Gorakshep and navigate the rugged and bumpy course, which takes about 2 hours. After a few minutes of the easy start, the trek gets intense with boulders and sandy fields. Upon reaching the summit of Kala Patthar, we’ll get a stunning view of Mt. Everest and the south face of Mt. Pumori. We’ll also spot the icefalls and glaciers sparkling on the shaft of morning sunlight. After having a wonderful time at the clifftop, we’ll descend the trail back to Gorakshep. We’ll stop there for about half an hour to have breakfast and slowly start to climb down the path to Pheriche. The trail is mostly downhill, but in-between, we’ll have to take a few steep hills. Passing the windswept cliffs and steppes, we’ll manage to get to Pheriche. It’s a small village, perched above the Tsola River in eastern Nepal. Pheriche is a famous Sherpa village where trekkers seek lodging and food while on the base camp trek.
After getting proper rest at Pheriche, we’ll yet again descend the trail. After few minutes walk, we will head for Phungi Thanga. After an uphill hike from Kyangjuma for almost an hour, we’ll enter the Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar. While approaching the village, we can see many small white chortens and Tibetan monasteries. Overnight stay in a lodge.
Today is the last day of our classic trail of Khumbu. We’ll make a final descent from Namche to Lukla by walking through the Dudh Koshi River valley and passing several villages, including Manjo. We’ll make our way through the densely forested area and take a short uphill climb before descending to the Bhote Koshi River, which we’ll cross several times. After making a final ascend over the rugged hill, we’ll ultimately end up at Lukla.
Today, we’ll board the flight to Kathmandu early in the morning. For a good half an hour, we’ll get to enjoy the aerial view of sky-scraping snow peaks, sweeping hills, and villages. After landing at Tribhuvan Airport, we’ll transfer you to the hotel where you can get some sleep and have delicious food.
After having a delicious breakfast, you will be escorted to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to take the scheduled flight back to your home.
