Overview
Everest Base Camp with Gokyo and Cho La Pass Trek is one of the most loved and adventurous trekking destinations in the Khumbu region. The trail is strenuous that goes through the pass called Cho La (5420m) which connects the beautiful Gokyo valley with Everest Base Camp. You will get to witness mighty Himalayan ranges, tranquil lakes, gorgeous sceneries, picturesque villages, old monasteries, and colorful festivals of the legendary Sherpas along your way.
You will begin your journey by taking a short flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. After reaching Lukla, you will begin your trek and reach Namche Bazaar which is also the largest residing area of the famous Sherpas. In Namche Bazaar, you will take a break to get acclimatized with the altitude. From here, you will walk on the Everest Base Camp trail and the rocky summit of Kala Patthar (5550m) via the famous Tengboche Monastery. You will observe the most heart-pounding views of Mt. Everest (8848m) and its neighboring mountains from both the base camp and Kala Patthar. You will then trek to Gokyo valley crossing the frozen pass of Cho La (5420m). You will visit all the high valleys of Khumbu and also get to explore the upper valley of Gokyo. On the way to Gokyo valley, you will witness the grand Ngozumpa glacier, which is the longest glacier in Nepal. You will then head to Gokyo Lake where you will observe the breath-taking reflection of the stunning snow-covered peaks of Khumbu in the green water below. You can also take an excursion to Gokyo Ri (5360m) for a panoramic view of Mt. Everest (8848m), Cho Oyu (8188m), and Lhotse (8414m), among others. All of the six pristine Gokyo lakes can also be seen from the top of Gokyo Ri (5360m). On your way back, you can buy souvenirs in Namche Bazaar to take back home for your loved ones.
Itinerary
As you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu, you will be welcomed by one of our airport representatives who will then transfer you to your hotel. Stay overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
We take the early morning flight from Kathmandu to Lukla. Various landscapes and beautiful mountains are seen throughout the flight. The trek begins shortly after reaching Lukla. Walking downhill over the Dudh Koshi gorge and crossing barley and potato fields, we finally reach Phakding. Overnight stay in Phakding.
From Phakding, the track goes to the Dudh Koshi valley north, twisting through the pines and passing on the suspension bridges to reach the village of Monjo. Monjo is the main entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park. From Monjo, the path moves past waterfalls, Sherpa villages, and forests of rhododendron, magnolia, and fir. One can witness the first views of Mt Everest (8848m) if the weather is clear. Reach the busiest junction for the trekkers and locals, Namche Bazaar. Later, explore Namche Bazaar which is also the gateway to Everest. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
We will have a full day rest so that we won’t face any difficulty ahead. Today we make a short acclimatization hike up to Khumjung, a pleasant Sherpa village above Namche. Also, while returning down, one can visit Everest View Hotel for impressive views of Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Thamserku (6623m), Nuptse (7861m), and Lhotse (8414m). You have the full day free to enjoy the perfect panoramic views or to wander around the market. Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.
Walking towards Tengboche with the superb views of mountains will be the best part of this day. Breathtaking views of Everest (8848m), Ama Dablam (6856m), Nuptse (7861m), Lhotse (8414m), and a close-up view of Thamserku (6623m) can be seen on the way. Continuing the gradual trail with few ups and downs, Sanasa is reached, which is the major trail junction to Gokyo Valley and Everest Base Camp. After climbing steeply through the pine forest, we arrive in Tengboche. Tengboche is home to the famous Tengboche Monastery, which is the biggest monastery in the Khumbu region. Overnight stay in Tengboche.
The track crosses Imja River via a suspension bridge to reach Dingboche. The village of Pangboche is passed en route. Dingboche is also known as the “Summer Valley” of Khumbu and contains long wall built to guard the village’s crops against the cold winds that incline down the Imja Valley. Dingboche, as the name echoes, gets more sun too. Elegant views of Lhotse (8414m), Ama Dablam (6856m), and Island Peak (6189m) from Dingboche are quite amazing to see. Overnight stay in Dingboche.
This day will be the rest day in Dingboche. We can carry a short ascend of 400m to the Nangkartshang Gompa situated on the ridge north of Dingboche. Witness a mesmerizing view of Makalu (8463m) from here. You can trek uphill to Chhukhung Ri (4730m) which takes approximately 4 to 5 hours from Dingboche. To the north of Dingboche, there are remarkable views of Lhotse’s huge South Face. Overnight stay in Dingboche.
On the trail towards Lobuche, there is the Trekker’s Aid Post, located in Pheriche (4210m). The Chupki Lhara is then reached from where mesmerizing mountains can be seen. The path then goes downhill to the Khumbu Glacier moraine. The views of mountain peaks like Khumbutse (6665m), Lingtren (6749m), and Pumori (7165m) emerge in the skyline. Mount Nuptse (7861m) also appears up ahead once the glacier pass is crossed. Slowly, walk further on from Lobuche alongside the world’s highest glacier—the Khumbu Glacier. Moving further for about 2-3 hours from Lobuche, reach Gorakshep, a tranquil place to be at. Overnight stay in Gorakshep.
We walk on frost blanketed paths and then climb on steep trails above Gorakshep. As we make our way towards Everest Base Camp, the snowy peaks can be seen becoming closer and bigger. After two hours of strenuous trekking, we finally reach Everest Base Camp. The view of the mighty Everest (8848m) is surreal when seen from its very foot. Various other peaks of the Mahalangur Himalayan Range are also seen ravishing from Everest Base Camp. Later, we walk down the slippery trails back to the lodge in Gorakshep. Overnight stay in Gorakshep.
Today we start our journey early to watch the sunrise from Kala Patthar. We ascend on an icy and rocky path till we reach the large upland of Kala Patthar. From Kala Patthar, stunning view of Everest (8848m) and the lovely peaks of Lingtren (6749m), Khumbutse (6665m), and several others can be seen along with the absolutely gorgeous sunrise. We then head back to Gorakshep and continue to descend alongside Khumbu lacier until reaching Lobuche. We first descend alongside the river from Lobuche, enjoying the view of the gorgeous mountains in the backdrop. Afterward, we climb gradually towards Dzongla via Chola Tsho. The view of Cholatse (6335m) and Lobuche (6145m) stand out in Dzongla. Overnight stay in Dzongla.
Walk early morning for three hours to reach on top of the high mountain pass, Cho La (5,420m). Before you get to the top of Cho La, we have to walk on ice for about 20 minutes. From the top of the pass, we are able to view a breathtaking panorama of Cho Oyu (8,188m), Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,414m), and several other snowy peaks. Continuing straight, we come across the Indian army mountaineers’ monuments. The trail can be misleading hence it is important that we follow our guide attentively. We cross Chola pass with rocky banks and moraines of Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal, before reaching the tranquil Gokyo Lake. We explore the quaint Gokyo village in the evening while relishing the spectacular view of Cho Oyu (8,188m). Overnight stay in Gokyo.
Climb up to Gokyo Ri (5360m) for beautiful views of Cho Oyu (8188m), Chamar (7287m), Everest (8848m), Lhotse (8414m), and so on along with the view of the pristine Gokyo lakes. Hike back down to Dudh Pokhari, the third Gokyo Lake, and enjoy the peaceful environs. Leaving Gokyo village behind, we descend on the banks of Ngozumpa Glacier via second and first Gokyo lakes. Then we follow the downstream trail of Dudh Koshi River all the way to Machharmo.
Continuing to follow the Dudh Koshi River, we descend through lovely rhododendron forests on our way to Namche Bazaar. We arrive in several popular places like Dhile, Phortse Thanga, Mong, and Sanasa, and cross the longest Mani wall of Khumbu to finally reach Namche Bazaar. You can interact with the locals and get to know about their culture and tradition while having a cup of their special tea. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
Bidding goodbye to Namche Bazaar, today we return to Lukla where the trip started. We’ll take time to enjoy the accomplishment as a group and as an individual. You’ll also have enough time to explore the place. Enjoy the environment and share stories with the local people since today is the last day of the trek. Overnight stay in Lukla.
We take an early flight back to Kathmandu. On arrival, you will be taken to the hotel so that you can rest and freshen up. Later, you can wander around the streets of Kathmandu and do some shopping for your loved ones back home. Feel free to get the taste of food and lovely ambiance of Kathmandu. Overnight at a hotel in Kathmandu.
Your adventure in Nepal ends today. A representative will drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport a few hours before the scheduled flight.

Q: I’ve never trekked before. Can I do this trek?
Answer: As long as you are reasonably fit, mentally prepared and can walk for 6-7-hours a day then no matter who you are and what your background is, a bit of training may be necessary, but even that is not 100% essential for most.
Q: How many miles do you walk each day?
Answer: It is about 40 miles from Lukla to EBC and another 60 miles from EBC to Gokyo and back to Lukla. In average you walk around 4-7 miles per day while going up and 8-12 miles while coming down.
Q: Is there battery charging facility?
Answer: The tea houses have charging ability via their solar panels but if it has been cloudy for several days, there may not be enough reserves to charge barberries for your camera, and thus it is better to have an extra battery. Teahouses usually charge for it – maybe a 300-500 rupees per hour. Many people want to charge their batteries so try to plug your stuff in as soon as you arrive.
Q: Can I do laundry on the trek?
Answer: Yes, you can. You can take this service with guest house. This will not be by machine, it will be by hand. Or, you can do your own laundry in a bucket.
Q: Is there bottled water on the Everest Base Camp, Gokyo and Cho La Pass Trek?
Answer: Yes, there’s bottled water from Lukla all the way up to base camp, Cho La Pass and Gokyo Valley. But, the price goes up the higher you go. One liter bottle of water cost start around 70 rupees and at base camp cost well over 300 (around $3). A budget solution to this is to use water treatment solution or use water purifier tablets. Some purification tabs and drops make the water taste weird. Please be aware of that too. Buying boiled water can be a solution to save money from expensive bottled water but make sure if water was fully boiled or not before you buy.
Q: Is there age limit for this trek?
Answer: There isn’t any official age limit saying you can and cannot trek to this trek.
Q: How difficult is Everest Base Camp -Gokyo and Cho La Pass Trek route?
Answer: In terms of terrain there are no ropes needed and no ice picks needed. There is no vertical climbing involved. The ground is not paved. It is rough, rocky and gravel strewn. Most of the trek involves long paths that go up and then down. People with weak ankles should take caution. Depending on the time of year you go there can also be snow and ice in the trails. But crossing Cho La pass is more challenging. It is recommended to carry Ice axe.
Q: Can children go on the Everest Base Camp -Gokyo and Cho La Pass Trek ?
Answer: Yes is the general rule. It’s advisable that your child is reasonable and able to understand and follow instructions immediately. Your child should be mature enough to recognize altitude sickness symptoms.
We are advised to consider the following equipment as these are essentials while packing for the Everest Base Camp, Gokyo and Cho La Pass Trek. Adjustments to the list can be managed according to the requirements, interests, duration of trip, and season of trip. We can find variety of these gears to rent or buy in Kathmandu. Majority of the gears which are in sale in Kathmandu are locally manufactured and some are imported from china and they are much cheaper. And there are some famous branded gear shops in Kathmandu, Thamel.
