Altitude Sickness During 3 Days Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Poon Hill Trek 3 Days

The 3 days Poon Hill Trek is a moderate-altitude Himalayan journey. The highest elevation reached during this trek is 3,210 meters at Poon Hill. While the trek doesn’t take you to the breathtaking heights in the mountains, it still carries the risk of being affected by altitude sickness. This is because the symtoms of altitude sickness are experienced after going up the elevation of 2,500 meters.

The prime cause of altitude sickness is the thinning air in high altitudes. As we ascend more into the alpine locations, the air pressure continues to decrease. The oxygen level in the depleting air is relatively lower, which causes breathing difficulty. Our body finds it difficult to adjust to the lower oxygen levels of the higher grounds and faces several other health complexities, ultimately leading to altitude sickness. The general symptoms of altitude sickness are headache, dizziness, fatigue, shortness of breath, sleeping difficulty, rapid heartbeat, nausea etc. If you experience any of these symptoms during the trek, it will be best to descend to the familiar altitudes immediately. Stay there until the symptoms disappear and only ascend to the elevations after your body fully recovers.

To prevent the altitude sickness from prevailing, you can consider the following mitigating measures

  • Stay well-hydrated by drinking adequate water, juices, and other fluids
  • Ascend at a slow pace, taking regular breaks and allowing ample time for the body to adapt to the changing altitudes
  • Do not smoke or drink alcohol, which will dehydrate your body and exacerbate the altitude sickness
  • Take anti-altitude sickness medications such as a diamox pill
  • Avoid the intake of sleeping pills
  • Eat a healthy diet and nutritious meals rich in vitamins, proteins, and minerals

The toilets are usually traditional squat styles and communal. Likewise, bathrooms and dining halls are also available for common use.

During the Ghorepani Poon Hill trekking journey, you will have all three meals, i.e., breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Teahouses serve you healthy and nutritious dishes prepared from locally grown crops and vegetables. Their menu comprises a variety of traditional food items and some popular continental cuisines. Dal bhat (rice, lentils, and pickles) is a main meal in the teahouse. Apart from that, you can get to taste the delectable delicacies of momo (dumpling), chowmein, thukpa, flatbread, eggs (boiled, fried, scrambled), noodles, mushroom soups, etc. You can also sample the local taste of Western dishes such as pizza, burgers, sandwiches, and pasta.
