Overview Of Mardi Himal Trek

Mardi Himal Trek is a new trekking route in the Annapurna region. It is situated on the east side of Annapurna Base Camp Trek. It lies in the Gandaki Zone near to the city of Pokhara.

These trails were opened for trekkers in 2012. It is a short trek that reaches the base of Mardi Himal.

As you walk these routes, you walk past many villages built with stones. And forests filled with colorful rhododendron, pine trees, birch, etc.

Along the way, you get to see many mountain peaks such as Machhapuchre, Annapurna, Hiunchuli, etc.

You will be walking through dense forests till the elevation of 3300 m. Then after that, you walk through rugged trails in the mountains from where the view of the snowy peaks looks mesmerizing.

In a short time, these trekking routes have been able to make its name. But still, it is not as crowded as other treks of this region. It is a quiet walk enjoying the beauty of mother nature.

Trek Route Summary

Mardi Himal Trek is a 9 days package that takes you through exciting adventures in a short time period.

As you arrive at the International airport in Kathmandu, the respective person will pick you up from there. And drop you off at your hotel and help you check-in.

The rest of the day is free as no plans have been made for this day. You can roam the local markets or stay in your room.

The next day you drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara on a tourist bus. In this drive, you get to view small settlements, large open fields, etc along the way.

You might reach Pokhara early so you can visit Phewa lakes or other attractions sites for the rest of the day.

On your third day, the trekking journey begins towards Mardi Base Camp. You wake up early and take an hour’s drive to Kande. From there you trek towards Deurali passing the Australian Base Camp. You stay the night in Deurali.

You make an ascend in the trails towards forest camp and walk through dense forests filled with various species of flora and fauna. Walking the paths you reach Low camp and stay there for tonight.

Walking through the lush green forests you head towards High camp for this day. Along the way, you will see the mesmerizing view of beautiful mountain peaks. Watching the beautiful views you reach your today’s destination and rest for the night.

The sixth day is the important day of your trek as you will head towards the highlight of this trip i.e. Mardi Himal Base Camp. You will walk through rough trails to reach here.

After reaching Base Camp you stay there for some time and trek down towards Sidhing. This day you will have walked a lot so you will spend the night in one of the tea houses in Sidhing.

You will have a delicious breakfast here and drive towards Pokhara. After reaching today’s destination you will stay here for the night.

On your eighth day, you head back to Kathmandu. This is your final day in Nepal so you can roam the local markets and buy souvenirs for your family. You will stay the night in one of the hotels.

Today you will return back to your home country with beautiful memories of Nepal.

Given below is the detailed information about duration, altitude, etc you will be covering in a day. Mardi Himal Trek Map provides you with information that is helpful while planning this trip.

You will be following these routes to reach Mardi Himal Base Camp:

Kathmandu – Pokhara

Drive Distance: 200 km

Drive Duration: 6 to 7 hours

Maximum Altitude: 827 m

After arriving at the Tribhuwan International airport our representative will pick you up and drop you off at your respective hotel. You have the rest of the day for you so you can visit nearby markets.

It would be better to rest your body as you have to wake up early the next day. You stay the night in Kathmandu.

On your second day, you head towards Pokhara viewing the beautiful scenic landscapes and hills. Throughout the way, you will be accompanied by small towns, mountain peaks, large fields, etc.

Pokhara is a beautiful city that attracts many tourists as this is the starting point for numerous famous treks. You can visit Phewa Tal and ride a boat or just walk along the lakeside enjoying the lively environment.

You will spend the night in one of the hotels.

Pokhara – Kande (drive)

Kande – Deurali (trek)

Drive Distance: 26.8 km

Drive Duration: one and a half hour

Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Max Altitude (Kande): 1770 m

Max Altitude (Deurali): 3200 m

Today after having your breakfast, you will head towards Kande using transportation. On your way, you will pass small villages such as Hyanja, Phedi, etc.

You travel via the Baglung Highway and reach Kande. From there, you trek towards Deurali.

You will make an uphill climb until you reach the Australian Base Camp. It is situated at an altitude of 2165 m. The view of Mount Machhapuchhre is awesome from here.

Then you head forward in the trails and reach Deurali. You get the wide-angle view of Annapurna Massif and Pokhara valley along these routes. There are a limited number of hotels here.

You will stay in one of the tea houses for the night.

Deurali – Low Camp

Trek Distance: 8.5 km

Trek Duration: 7 to 8 hours

Maximum Altitude: 3150 m

This day you will walk from Deurali to Low Camp. These routes don’t offer many human settlements, so you should carry enough water for today.

You will start by ascending through forests filled with pine trees and colorful rhododendron until you reach Forest Camp. It is situated at an altitude of 2550 m.

Reaching the camp you make a steep ascent and again enter a beautiful forest. If you are lucky you might even sight some wild animals such as Snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, etc.

Walking through the lush green forest you arrive at Low Camp. The view of Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre is quite striking from up here.

You will spend the night in one of the tea houses.

Low Camp – High Camp

Trek Distance: 5.5 km

Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours

Max Altitude: 3600 m

This day you will walk from Low Camp to High Camp. You begin the trek through forests filled with colorful rhododendrons till you reach Badal Danda.

You will be walking past Badal Danda, a scenic viewpoint above the clouds. From here, you can see a wide 360 degree view of the valleys down below and mesmerizing mountains to your North. There are a couple of hotels available here.

Leaving the Badal Danda behind you walk ahead in the trail and after some time reach the middle camp. From here you ascend the paths, you can notice the tree lines getting lighter.

You reach your destination after walking for some time. There are high chances of viewing Danphe (national bird of Nepal) while traveling to High Camp.

Along these trails, you get to view many majestic mountains. The sunset view from this place will be a memorable one.

You will stay the night here in one of the tea houses.

High Camp – Mardi Base Camp

Trek Distance: 6.5 km

Trek Duration: 4 to 5 hours

Max Altitude: 4500 m

Today you will hike towards Mardi Base Camp the highlight of this trek. Having your breakfast you will take an uphill climb in the trails and reach Upper View Point. It is situated at an altitude of 4200 m.

From here following the trails you reach Mardi Base Camp. You will be impressed by the striking view of Mardi Himal and the unique landscape below.

You also get to see various other peaks such as Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, Ganesh Himal, etc.

High Camp – Sidhing

Trek Distance:

Trek Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Max Altitude: 1850 m

After enjoying the scenic views you get from the Mardi Base Camp. You now return back to High Camp retracing your footsteps.

Reaching High Camp you have your lunch and head towards Sidhing. You will descend through the trails crossing lush green forests along the way.

Sidhing is a beautiful village where you will be staying for the night.

Sidhing – Pokhara

Drive Distance: 40 km

Drive Duration: 3 to 4 hours

Max Altitude: 827 m

Today you will head back to Pokhara via private jeep. Along the ride, you will see waterfalls, mountain peaks, villages, etc.

Arriving Pokhara you are free to do anything. You can visit attraction sites such as David’s Fall, Bat Cave, Phewa Lake, etc. If you like cycling then it is also available there.

Back to Kathmandu

Drive Duration: 6 to 7 hours

Drive Distance: 201 km

Max Altitude: 1400 m

Today you drive back to Kathmandu via tourist bus. You will travel viewing the green hills and villages throughout the highway.

This is the last of your trek so you can visit local markets near you. You should visit Thamel as it is famous for its nightlife. The area is filled with tourists visiting pubs, clubs, restaurants, etc.

You will leave for your country the next day with beautiful memories of this trek.

The weather in these trekking routes changes according to the season you would like to visit in. There are four seasons to choose from Spring, Autumn, Winter, and Monsoon.

Spring Season

This is the season that brings new beginning along with it. The months of March, April, and May come during this season. These months are the crowded time of the year.

During this season, the hills get its lost greenery back and the paths are filled with blooming flowers. The skies are clear giving unobstructed views of the mountain ranges.

The temperature ranges from 17 to 20 degrees Celcius on average. It is warm and sunny during the day but can get chilly during the night, but it is not freezing.

Autumn Season

This is the season when the beauty of mother nature is at its peak. The months of September, October, and November come during this season. These months are peak season for trekking.

During this season, flowers will have already bloomed making the forests colorful all around. Also, clear blue skies that give the striking view of lush green hills and mountain peaks

The temperature ranges from 5 to 15 degrees. The weather is just perfect for trekking during the day, but it can be cold during the night.

Monsoon Season

In countries like Nepal, the summer and monsoon season are combined so the first few weeks are hot and later you face heavy downpours. The months of June, July, and August come during this season.

These months are the least preferred time for trekking. During this season, the routes are slippery, muddy and filled with insects such as leeches, mosquitos, etc.

The skies are covered with dark rain clouds hiding the view of mountain peaks. The temperature ranges from 5 to 10 degrees. It is quite challenging to walk during heavy rainfalls. You should carry raincoats along with you.

Winter Season

This is the season when the whole valley is covered in blankets of snow. The months of December, January, and February come during this season. These months are the offseason for trekking.

During this season the skies are clear giving the most beautiful view of snow peak mountains. However, the cold weather will be a huge obstacle for you.

The temperature ranges from 9 to -5 degrees. It is warm during the day and very cold during the night and early mornings. It gets below freezing point in high elevation.

Difficulties Faced in Mardi Himal Trek

This trek is graded as a moderate level climb. You won’t be needing any technical equipment such as ropes, ice picks, etc for this trek. If you have experience in trekking, then it will be easy for you.

But for inexperienced trekkers, it can be difficult walking up and down the steep hills for about 6 to 7 hours a day. You can overcome this obstacle by training your body and increasing your stamina.

Another problem can be altitude Sickness as you will be traveling, above 4000 m in this trek. Usually, trekkers suffer altitude sickness above 3000 m, so drink plenty of water and stroll.

Permit required for Mardi Himal Trek

While going on a trek in the routes of Mardi Himal you need two permits. The ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit) and TIMS (Tourism Information Management System).

You need to carry the permit along with you in this entire trek. It should be shown in checkpoints that are placed along the trails. This permit is non-transferable and can only be used once.
